USS SAN DIEGO AFS-6 "The Best"

(Site is Sound Enhanced)

Dear Shipmate,

Wanted to share with you the progress of our 2010 reunion.  As you know we are holding the second reunion for the USS San Diego (AFS-6) this coming June in Charleston, SC.

The response from many of you have been very positive, either having already registered or have advised you will be attending, and to all of you, Thank You for supporting our reunions and we look forward to seeing you in June.  Comparing the registrations and hotel bookings to date, we are ahead in attendance for the same period of time we had for our reunion in Norfolk/2008.  And I am pleased to say that many shipmates from our first reunion will be in attendance in Charleston.  And for all the new attendees, we look forward to meeting you.

Charleston, SC is a great city to visit and has many entertainment venues for the whole family, including kids.  Our reunion opens up on Thursday night with a Welcome Reception, and scheduled events each day of the reunion.

If you are planning on attending the reunion, we look forward to hearing from you.   If anyone has misplaced or has not received the reunion information, please reply back to wvcox915@aol.com  and we will email all information to you right away.  Our reunion will be held at The Sheraton North Charleston Airport, and hotel rooms are still available.  You can review all of the 2010 Reunion

Information through the "2010 Reunion" segment of this web site. All reunion information posted on this web site can be downloaded.

Navy Ship Outruns Pirates
By CNN
May 8, 2009 - 1:12:52 PM

Pirates off the eastern coast of Somalia picked the wrong target this week when they tried to attack a U.S. Navy ship, the Navy said Thursday.

The attempted attack happened Wednesday against the USNS Lewis and Clark, a dry cargo and ammunition ship that supports the U.S. Navy 5th Fleet and coalition ships in the area, the Navy said.

Pirates off the coast of Somalia tried to attack the USNS Lewis and Clark on Wednesday.

Two pirate skiffs pursued the Lewis and Clark for more than an hour as it headed north, the Navy said. They got as close as one nautical mile from the ship.

The Lewis and Clark sped up and tried to escape the pirates, and the ship's security team issued verbal warnings to the approaching skiffs, the Navy said.

The suspected pirates, who were then two nautical miles behind the Lewis and Clark, fired small arms at the ship. They fell a mile short of the ship's stern, the Navy said.

The Lewis and Clark sped up and the skiffs stopped their chase.

"The actions taken by Lewis and Clark were exactly what the U.S. Navy has been recommending to prevent piracy attacks -- for both commercial and military vessels," said Capt. Steve Kelley, commander of Task Force 53, assigned to the Lewis and Clark.

"Merchant mariners can and should use Lewis and Clark's actions as an unequivocal example of how to prevent a successful attack from occurring," he said.

Evasive maneuvers and other defense measures such as on-board security teams have worked to protect other ships and their cargo, the Navy said.

Letter to the Editor

All Hands Magazine

Printed:  September 1991

Bravo Zulu

I have read All Hands magazine every month for the past five years while I have been in the Navy.  My first duty Station was USS San Diego (AFS 6), a combat support supply ship. The reason I am writing this to you, is because I don't think the AFS community gets enough recognition it deserves. The men and women of these fine ships work hard and fast to support the fleet, we are talking about ConRep, VertRep, fueling, etc. Most of the time, they work around- the-clock and are more than willing to make a sacrifice to ensure that the mission is completed safely and productively. I would like to dedicate thisletter to the men and women who served on support ships and to thank them fora job well done.
